The “Big Splash 10-10-10” – Sponsored Swim
The Big Splash is back following its successful introduction in 2008 when over £3600 was raised in sponsorship for local charities and organisations.
This year’s sponsored swim is to take place on Sunday 10th October 2010 and will be known as Big Splash 10-10-10. The event is planned to last between 0900hrs and 1900hrs but final timings will depend on the number of entries. Big Splash 10-10-10 is being jointly organised by The Rotary Club of Hexham, North Country Leisure and Tynedale Amateur Swimming Club. The event is being further supported by Waitrose, Northumbrian Water, One Life and The Abbey Press.
Participating in Big Slash 10-10-10 will provide a significant opportunity for a variety of organisations to raise funds, which will be used to support Tynedale charities and organisations. The organisers are anticipating that entries will be received from schools, youth organisations, local businesses and other organisations and hope to attract at least forty teams.
There will be an entry fee of £20 per team to help with costs and each team member will receive a memento for participating in the event. Teams entering will be expected to obtain sponsorship from individuals and organisations based on the total number of successful lengths swum by the team and an amount per length.
The format is similar to that adopted for Big Splash 2008 but in order to increase the number of participants the entry rules have been changed slightly, in that teams can comprise of between 3 and 6 members and have the option of donating 100% funds raised to a general distribution fund OR retaining 75% for the organisation they are representing, with the balance going to the general distribution fund.
The event format will be on the basis of a 10 hour relay starting at 0900hrs and finishing at 1900 hrs. The objective is to have teams of between 3 and 6 persons participating on the day. Each Team will swim for approximately one hour, on a relay basis, with all six lanes in the main pool being used throughout the day. The small pool will remain open to the public on the Sunday. Staff from North Country Leisure and members of The Rotary Club of Hexham will be stewarding the event.
