Mercy Ships was the chosen charity of Hexham Rotary Club for Rotary Year 2007/8. This organisation has bought ships and kitted them out as floating hospitals. They anchor in ports, mostly in Africa, and do operations on-board for poor and underprivileged people who otherwise would have to continue suffering from their condition. The Committee organised a ceilidh in November 2007 which raised £530 (see photos above). This sum was matched pound-for-pound by a Mercy Ships benefactor. Visit www.mercyships.org.uk for more information.

| Matching Grants: Rotary International (RI) will match donations made by the Rotary Club of Hexham, usually doubling our donations for carefully vetted projects in developing countries. In the Rotary year 2007/8, Hexham Rotary Club has secured matching grants for equipment for a school in Pakistan and another in Rwanda. Research shows that education is the most efficient and successful route out of poverty.

Shoebox Campaign. Each year Rotary issues boxes with its logo on the side. Each Rotarian is responsible for filling each box with a variety of goods, chosen from specified categories e.g. household items, toys for a boy or a girl, or new clothing. The filled boxes are then sent to areas of need, sometimes even within Europe. Occasionally a recipient will write a letter of thanks to the donating Rotarian, if they have included their contact details in the box. See www.rotary1280.org/shoebox for details.

Aqua-filters: The Committee raised funds to buy five aqua-filters for use in remote villages in Sri Lanka. The filters are hand pumped and easy to maintain, and are used to purify contaminated water for drinking, reducing the risks of water-borne diseases affecting the local people.
